What VetDose is, and what you can do before you sign up.

VetDose is a clinical workspace for small-animal practice — dogs and cats. It holds four things that talk to each other: a dose calculator, a differential workflow called VetDDx, a prescription builder that prints on your clinic's letterhead, and the records those three produce.

Doses come from published drug monographs — 158 of them at the moment — and each one is written against standard veterinary references rather than summarised from memory.

You can try it without an account

The calculator, the drug pages and VetDDx all work signed out. You get a daily allowance (the exact numbers are in Plans & daily allowances), and a small counter on the page shows how much of it you have used.

Creating your account

1. Open Create free account from the top of any page.
2. Confirm your email address, then sign in.
3. Go to Clinic profile and fill in your practice name, address and logo. This is what appears on every prescription you print, so it is worth five minutes now.
4. Add yourself under Team, with your licence number and signature. That makes you a signing vet.

Once you are signed in, the left-hand panel in the calculator links to all of these, and shows live counts next to your dose history, prescriptions and team.

The dose calculator

From species to the volume in the syringe, in five steps.

There are two places to calculate a dose: the full workspace at /calculator/, and the compact calculator built into every drug monograph. They behave identically and share one daily allowance — ten calculations on drug pages and ten in the workspace count as twenty, not two separate twenties.

The five steps

1. Pick the drug. Type in the search box at the top. Press / anywhere on the page to jump straight into that box.
2. Choose the species — dog or cat. The dose tables differ, so this comes first.
3. Choose the clinical use. Each drug lists its indications separately, because the dose for sedation is not the dose for premedication.
4. Choose the route — IV, IM, SC, oral and others, depending on what the monograph supports for that indication.
5. Enter the body weight in kilograms, and pick the product you are actually holding.

Setting the dose rate

Most doses are published as a range. A slider lets you move between the low, middle and high end of that range, and every figure on screen updates as you move it. The middle is selected by default.

Which product you are holding

The result depends on the concentration in front of you, so tell it what you have:

• Injection — enter the concentration, and you get the volume in mL.
• Tablets — enter the tablet strength, and you get the number of tablets, rounded to a quarter where a tablet can sensibly be split.
• Oral solution, eye drops, nasal drops — same idea, in mL.
• Powder for reconstitution — enter the vial contents and the diluent volume; it works out the resulting concentration and then the dose from it.

Doses that are not simply mg/kg

The calculator handles the awkward ones as first-class cases, not as workarounds:

• Infusions (CRI) — µg/kg/min and mg/kg/hr, giving you the pump rate.
• Body surface area — mg/m² for chemotherapy protocols.
• Per animal — doses written per dog or per cat rather than per kilogram.
• Other units — µg/kg, ng/kg, g/kg, mL/kg, IU/kg and IU per animal.

Reading the result

The result card gives you the total dose in mg, the volume or tablet count to dispense, and the arithmetic written out so you can check it at a glance. Alongside it you get the route, the dosing frequency in plain English, the duration where the monograph states one, and the labelling status — whether this use is on-label or extra-label.

What happens to the calculation

Signed in, every calculation is saved to your dose history automatically — no save button. You will find it under Dose history, newest first. Signed out, nothing is kept.

Drug pages and the A–Z index

The monographs, and the calculator built into each one.

Every drug has its own page. You can reach it from the A–Z index, from the category menus in the site navigation, or by searching. Each page carries the monograph and a working calculator for that drug, so you rarely need to leave it.

What is on a monograph

• Dose tables by species, clinical use and route.
• Key notes and warnings — the practical cautions for that drug.
• Contraindications and the species it must not be used in.
• Source citations, so you can check any figure against the reference it came from.

VetDDx — working up a case

From a presenting sign to a ranked differential list, in four steps.

VetDDx is a structured differential workflow. You describe what is in front of you and it ranks the differentials that fit, with the findings that support or argue against each one. It is a thinking aid — you reach the diagnosis.

The four steps

1. System — pick the body system the case sits in.
2. Sign — pick the presenting sign that brought the animal in.
3. Questions — answer the guided questions. Each one narrows the list. Answer what you know and skip what you do not; unanswered questions simply carry no weight.
4. Results — read the ranked differentials.

Reading the results

• Each differential shows how well it fits the findings you entered.
• Supporting findings — what in your answers points towards it.
• Findings against — what argues away from it. Read these as carefully as the supporting ones.
• Confirmatory tests — what to run next, and what a positive or negative result would mean for that differential.
• Time-critical differentials are flagged so they stand out.

Saving a case

Signed in, you can save a completed case and reopen it later, with your answers and the ranking exactly as they were. Saved cases live in your workspace under VetDDx cases. Signed out, cases are not kept.

Prescriptions

Turning calculated doses into a document on your own letterhead.

The prescription builder is a tab inside the calculator, so you never lose your place. You decide what to prescribe; VetDose handles the paperwork.

Building one

1. Calculate the doses you want to prescribe. After each result, use Add to prescription — the drug is collected in a tray at the bottom of the screen with its dose already filled in.
2. Open the Prescription builder tab when you have collected everything.
3. Choose the owner, then the patient. Picking the owner narrows the patient list to that owner's animals. If they are new, add them here without leaving the page.
4. Choose the signing vet from your team. Their name, licence and signature go on the document.
5. Check each line — dose, quantity, and the directions for the client.
6. Review the preview on the right; it is exactly what will print.
7. Save, then print or download.

Presentation settings

Under Clinic profile you control how prescriptions look and behave: paper size, orientation, margins, date format, accent colour, heading and body fonts, where the logo and stamp sit, how long the prescription stays valid and how many refills it allows. Set them once; every prescription follows.

The archive

Saved prescriptions get a reference number and are kept in your archive. You can reopen one to read it, print it again exactly as it was first issued, or use it as the basis for a new one. Find it under Prescriptions.

Your clinic workspace

Where your records, your clinic and your history live.

Clinic profile

Your practice identity: name, address, phone, email, website and registration number, plus your logo and official stamp with size control for each. Everything here appears on printed prescriptions. This section also holds the presentation settings described above.

Team

The vets in your practice. Each has a name, role, licence number, specialisation and a signature — either typed or an uploaded image. Mark one as the default signer and every new prescription starts with them selected. How many team members you can add depends on your plan; see Plans & daily allowances.

Patients & owners

Two linked lists. Owners hold the client's contact details; patients hold the animal — species, breed, sex, date of birth, weight and clinical flags. Each patient belongs to an owner, which is what makes the prescription builder's owner-then-patient flow work. You can add, edit and search both, and open a patient to see everything ever recorded for it.

Dose calculations

Every calculation you have made, newest first, with the drug, species, weight and result. Alongside it you get a usage trend over time and your most-used drugs.

Prescriptions

Your prescription archive — reopen, reprint or duplicate any one of them.

VetDDx cases

Saved differential cases. Reopen one to see the answers you gave and the ranking they produced.

Activity

A running log of what has happened in your clinic record — what was added, changed or removed, and when. In a multi-vet practice it also shows who did it.

Profile and subscription

Your own name and contact details, and your current plan with what it includes and how much of your allowance you have used.

Security

Change your password, and see the devices currently signed in to your account. If you see a session you do not recognise, you can sign it out.

How the counter works

• One allowance for both calculators. The workspace calculator and the calculators inside drug pages draw on the same number. VetDDx has its own, separate allowance.
• The counter is on screen. The calculator shows how many you have used out of your allowance, and how many remain.
• It resets on its own — the "Counter" column above says when for each plan.
• Signed out, it counts per browser. Clearing your browser data or switching device starts a fresh count. Signed in, it follows your account everywhere.

When you reach the limit

The counter turns red and a message explains what has been reached and what your options are. Nothing you have already done is lost — history and archives stay exactly as they were, and the allowance refills on its own schedule.

Downloading everything you have

You can export your full clinic record at any time, on any plan. You get a single ZIP containing spreadsheet files you can open in Excel or Numbers — clinic details, team, owners, patients, calculations, prescriptions and cases — plus a complete data file that preserves everything exactly as stored.

Closing your account

The same section lets you delete your account and everything in it. This cannot be undone, so export first if you want a copy. You will be asked to confirm.
